Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Porsche Today, we have the Porsche 918 Spyder. Before that, there was the Carrera GT. While both of those cars are dramatic departures from the traditional, rear-engine Porsche formula, they owe their very existence to another wild child of the iconic German brand - the 959. Like so many of the great performance cars of yesteryear, the 959 was a homologation special, built just so Porsche could go racing in the clinically insane Group B rally series. Fewer than 400 959s hit the streets, but those that did were some of the most advanced cars…

The automotive and mainstream press (ourselves included) eagerly jumped on the story and rumors of a potential new record price for this "iconic" Porsche 917 quickly grew. Because of the undying genius and unstoppable hard work of our friends at Sloan Cars, the car was properly advertised, properly prepared, and brought top-dollar at auction. • XCAR Drives Our Teenage Fantasy Car: The Porsche 959

    Bradley Brownell
    30 Jul 2014 | 6:57 am
Porsche's 959 was the height of automotive technology in the late 1980s, and was the ultimate in excess. It was quick, it was fast, it was comfortable, it was expensive, it was gorgeous, and it was absolutely perfect. In its era, it was a part of a super-car renaissance. Much like we are experiencing today with Porsche's 918 Spyder, McLaren's P1, and Ferrari's LaFerrari, the 959 took on the best the world had to offer in the form of Jag's XJ220, and Ferrari's F40, though it did so in a very different way. Rather than attack the problem of achieving 200 miles per hour with brute force and gobs…

Velocity Channel is home to a number of my regularly watched shows including Chasing Classic Cars, What's My Car Worth, and OVERHAULIN'. If you're not familiar with OVERHAULIN', it features Chip Foose (the father of the modern hot rod) and his iconic designs. As much as I like OVERHAULIN' it's almost exclusively American Muscle. However, this week, tomorrow night in-fact, OVERHAULIN' will feature its first ever Porsche in the form of a 1962 356. While the promo video below suggests it will get the "full Foose treatment" the work is actually done in conjunction with Rod Emory of Emory…

The link brought us to a video filmed in Ultra High Definition by director Will Roegge; it's the inside story of BBI Autosport and the incredible Porsche Cup car they built for Jeff to run at Pikes Peak this year. In Jeff's own words it's a "Really nice 'behind the scenes' of what it takes to get a car to the summit of this famed mountain and the team that BBI Autosport creates to make that happen." I don't know about you, but I just don't get tired of these "behind the scenes" type of films, especially when it involves Pikes…

Kylamai, for those unfamiliar, is a grand prix circuit near Johannesburg in South Africa. Between 1967 and 1985, and again in '92 and '93, it was home to the South African Grand Prix, and has since hosted a variety of…

Air makes things slower. And air makes things faster: Aerodynamics is both a curse and a blessing for sports cars. The keyword here: downforce. Throughout its 50 years of development, the basic form of the Porsche 911 has been a perfect aerodynamic example of the latter. At the same time, the 911 provides an impressive lesson on how it is possible to continue to aerodynamically refine a car’s basic form without losing key aspects of its distinctive design and brand recognition. The aerodynamic contour of the Porsche 911 stems from the 1950s and is a legacy of the Porsche 356. In those days,…
